Leighton Buzzard History
- The market, at the centre of Leighton Buzzard, is both an historic and modern feature. It was built in 1894 to replace the original market (built in 1793) which had been destroyed by fire. The new building was designed by Mr John Belcher with a clock tower, which dominates the skyline to this day.
- Named in the Domesday Book of 1086 & included with its own market, Leighton Buzzard was one of the largest towns in Bedfordshire. It was also owned by King William I at this time. Linslade was also once a royal manor owned by Queen Edith, widow of Edward the Confessor.
- Leighton Buzzard was a traditional market where livestock, produce and manufactured products were traded with farmers and producers travelling in from the surrounding areas. The regularity of Tuesdays gave rise to the local saying, 'Tiddly Tuesday'; earned money from work and spent it at the local pub. The market has been at the heart of this Town's 'High Street' for a long time, and will be there for the foreseeable future.
- The Leighton-Linslade Town Council took ownership of the Charter in 2012 and has been managing its delivery since. Upon receiving the Charter, the Town Council also received a translation of the Charter Document given by Kathryn Faulkner of Bedfordshire Archives. The Market Cross is a meeting point for many people in Galway and it's one of the most popular destinations in town. You can often see people sitting around it to have their lunch, take a break or just enjoy the historic architecture.
